BIG SISTER

This month, Final Cut combined forces with Candy Productions to present all six episodes of their Big Sister Bar Challenge which was filmed in Brighton and premiered at the 2003 Gay & Lesbian Film Festival.

Big Sister is a lesbian version of TV's infamous Big Brother and in addition to being this being the first public screening since its premiere, it is the first time the film has been presented in its proper episodic TV version.

Tonight's DJ-VJ set featured the Candy Bar's own DJ Kate Wildblood and top Brighton VJ and Final Cut regular, Superfly Sister providing sound and visuals throughout the night. The duo allso performed a specially commissioned themed set during the interval, based around one of tonight's films, Story of a Star.

In between each episode of Big Sister we screened a selection of new short films and details of these are provided below.

:: THIS TIME NEXT YEAR - Director Lucy Bennett - 3 mins::
Talking head piece recently screened on C4 featuring an Iraqi refugee telling us how much he misses his homeland and his hopes of returning this year. Filmed on the Brighton seafront, the film subtly compares the recent destruction of his country with the rusting, doomed West Pier behind him.

:: GOOD DEFINITION - Director Anneliese Holles- 5 mins ::
Based upon the poetry of Naomi Foyle, who commissioned the film, Annelise Holles' new film illustrates a work focussing on the words cunt and cock . This is a challenging and visceral exploration of male and female sex/sexual experiences in all their poetic glory - and plenty of humour.

:: MATRIX PAINTBALL - Director Matt Watering - 4 mins::
Tongue-in-cheek action film set in a paintball game inside the virtual world of the Matrix in which two enemies stand off in the final battle to decide the fate of the planet. Fast, funny, not much plot, loads of high-tech effects.

:: LOOTERS - Director Arun Kumar - 10 mins ::
Anna and Gibbo follow the trail of a small 'ad to the residence of Mr Sifter, an unassuming elderly gentleman who opens his heart and his home to the mischievious couple. Will the pair take more than they should?

:: STORY OF A STAR - Directors: MetaLuna - 1 min ::
This one-minute gem was inspired by a series of striking 1950s TV adverts promoting a range of new synthetics benefiting women. The Deering Milliken Research Corporation sponsored them to push Agilon, a 'new and better stretch yarn for stockings'. Using material sourced from the Internet Movie Archive, Brighton-based VJs MetaLuna have reinterpreted the footage, accompanied by dark and foreboding sound track.
