BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE 2007

LAST-NIGHT SCREENING PARTY - Sunday, May 27th @ Po Na Na

Our final screening of the 2007 Brighton Festival took place at the Po Na Na souk bar. A typically eclectic night of films, it included brand-new ultra-shorts, left-field music videos, unclassifiable weird stuff and mainstream work, with several UK premieres.

Between the films we presented four live acts based based on the theremin, that iconic electronic instrument that featured on the soundtrack of many 50s SciFi films and the first series of Star Trek. There was even a theremin busker to serenade people as they arrived, in the form of Gordon Charlton, aka Beat Frequency, the man behind www.theremin.org.uk

SPACE DOG UK
Featuring the Clara 2.0 animatronic doll, the world's first robot thereminist. Seriously creepy.
THE FUNFAIR ALLSTARS
The FA's present Get Carter's, an hilarious spoof of the classic UK thriller, starring 'Michael Caine'.
JOANNA 90 & HER SATELLITE OF LOVE - spaced-out outer-space tribute to the UK's first (and only) space-pop hit, Telstar.
THE MICHAEL RENNIE FAN CLUB PRESENTS
Their latest theremin-based film/music extravaganza is a semi-respectful homage to the film that put this instrument on the map. Klaatu Barada Nikto!

BIG ASS, MINI SKIRT - Directors James Fidian & Spencer Cross - 3 mins
First episode in a new series of animated music videos following the intergalactic, club-hopping adventures of The Body Snatchers
.

UK PREMIERE

IS IT ME? - Director Robert Reina - 10 mins
In this excellent comedy, a businessman is waiting impatiently in a taxi queue, late for an appointment and suffering from a knee injury. A young man behind him tries to start a conversation with a string of (very good) impersonations and persists in trying to amuse despite being rebuffed. Things eventually get violent.

EYE WONDER - Director James Herbert - 1 min
Hey, you, what’s that sound? Excellent ultra-short with completely unexpected punchline.

UK PREMIERE

PORTAL - Director Gareth Crook - 2 mins
An interesting experiment with 3D environment and digital subconsciousness (it says here). 'An abstract gateway to the mind, body and soul elements of existence, as depicted by arms on the Portal, each with its own contribution of binary code and morphing texture maps.'

UK PREMIERE

PASSION IS ACCURATE - Director Bevan Walsh - 3 mins
Originally made for the Radar Festival and beautifully shot in black & white, this video promotes a new song by The Kills about a relationship that is on the rocks. The lyrics represent words unspoken between a couple desperately trying to re-ignite their passion during an overnight stay in a cheap hotel.

UK PREMIERE

SEED - Director Gianluca Bonomo - 9 mins
Set in an abstract and dark environment this excellent dance film examines a very unusual mother-son relationship.

A BIT OF EDUCATION - Director El Skid - 3 mins
A cheeky homage to graffiti artist Banksy, this music video promotes the latest single from the band, Undercut, by integrating animated elements with shaky, hand-held camera to create a hyper-real feel.

TELLING MARK - Director Guy Ducker - 10 mins
In this powerful drama, Mark and Carlotta are preparing a dinner party for Mark’s work mates when he reveals that everyone at work has been acting strangely towards him. When the dinner guests finally arrive, we discover why.

THE SUCKER - Director Kier Black - 12 mins
Life is boring and the job of a car park attendant where nobody parks is the most boring job in the entire history of tedium. Until The Sucker arrives, when everything changes – for the worst.

UK PREMIERE

SURVEIL - Director Chirstinn White - 1 min
This prolific dance film director has created another compelling ultra-short, this time capturing a performer in various phases of flight using a mixture of B/W and colour moving images and stills.

PINCH ME JESUS - Director James Scott - 3 mins
This hilariously bad-taste send up of American evangelical TV was the hit of last year's festival and we couldn't resist screening it one more time this year. Totally authentic in look and feel, yet made in Hove. You'll love it!

BLEACH - Director Tejal Patni - 2 mins
Seriously creepy psycho horror set in a launderette.

PURGATORY - Christopher C. F. Chow - 8 mins
Even more creepy psycho chiller about a funeral director with no clients. So how does he earn a living?

RAVE DOG - Director Dom Phillips - 4 mins
Everybody’s talking about ‘new rave’ (oh, yeah?), but nobody seems to know what it is. This Channel 4 short finds out by entering the world of Trash Fashion - where we meet more immature, talentless, self-indulgent egotists than you can poke a stick at.

UK PREMIERE

KASTING - Director Alyosha Saari - 2mins
A young actress auditions for a part to die for. This one's just plain psycho. And sooo creepy.

SOMETHING I PREPARED EARLIER - Director Richard Harris - 16 mins
You are who you eat

Set in a privatised, TV-obsessed Britain of the near future, this dark satire poses the question: can an artificially intelligent being have a mid-life crisis?

UK PREMIERE

BBB

SPANKY! SPANKY! - Director T. Arthur Cottam - 3 mins
US rude-boy director Cottam's attempt at a music video. Set to a thumping disco beat, it is set in an American high school and tells the old story of teacher-pupil romance. That's teacher on the left, by the way.
