:: Programme: Thursday, 27th March 2003 ::

:: SLEEP - Director Callum Morrison - 5 mins ::
A third offering from this talented Brighton animator who has surprised and shocked Final Cut audiences with Motoring Britain and Joyrider, two weird stop-frame animations featuring laser-eyed doll's heads, exploding police cars and live human hearts.

:: RING PEACE - Director Lynne Angel - 5 mins ::
A special preview screening of this clever short from first-time filmaker, Lynne Angel, which tells the story of Guy, who is engrossed in a book on his train journey home. The book is the most interesting, life-changing read he has ever had and as the carriage fills with people, he becomes increasingly absorbed. When the train is delayed, he continues reading as the other passengers talk to each other and make noisy calls on their mobiles. With increasing difficulty he manages to shut these interruptions out, but when a woman has a particularly loud conversation with her GP's surgery it becomes too much for him and he settles the matter once and for all.

:: JUTE - Director Ben Bruges - 8 mins ::
During the 2003 Brighton Festival, the Fireraisers theatre company created an installation inside a shop window in the old Hanningtons department store which told the story of a man who spontaneously combusted. This is an idiosynchratic film from the director of Venus & Mars about an unusual work of art and the mixed reactions of passers-by when they noticed something rather strange on their high street.

:: THE RING MASTER'S CIRCUS - Director Kevin Brett - 10 mins ::
Every clown has his day...

Tormented by the past, the present and the future, the Clown must escape the prison that is The Ring Master’s Circus. Being hunted by the Lion Tamer, the Acrobat and the Strongest Man in the World, he must find comfort, happiness and safety. Haunted by his memories he must flee his oppressive home and those he once called friends. The chase is on!

:: I KNOW ALL THAT - 10 mins ::
This uncompromising documentary was shot in Palestine by a group of Brighton film students and looks at the Palestinian struggle and the effects of long-term coloniziation of the West Bank by Israel. The film presents the views of one individual and how his first-hand experience of Israeli military aggression cemented his feelings of support for the Palestinian people.

:: CARPET PEOPLE - Director Devlin Crow - 10 mins ::
A drama starring Richard Briers playing against type as a lonely old man close to death. Trapped in his decrepit flat, he hallucinates about the small beings inhabiting his carpet who are preparing to take him away...

:: DYING BREED - Director Christian Bazounguissa - 10 mins ::
Similar in style to last month's A Short Cut, this is another strong documentary from a Brighton filmmaker. Again, the subject is a local personality-come-institution and this time it is David Marmery, the last fishmonger in the Brighton Open Market. Produced in 2002, this affectionate film marked the 70th anniversary of 'Sid's Fish Shop' from which two generations of the Marmery family, David's father, Sid and then David himself, have been selling fish since 1932.

:: BREAKSPACE - Director Andy Galletly - 4 mins ::
This is the first film from the psi-o collective; a group of artists and producers who apply self referential concepts of production to the creation of audiovisual material. Drawing inspiration from programming syntax and structure, characters are developed which embody these themes in order to explore a collapsible and dialectically evolving narrative. It explores a fantasy world of corrupted codes and reciprocating audiovisual patterns in which the breakSpace character embodies a server-based virus which, although having the primary function of corruption, can also be seen to aid in the progress of a system (it says here).

:: PETE - 10 mins ::
Pete is in his 50s and claims to have been homeless since the age of 18. He is a well-know face around the Sussex University campus where he has been selling the Big Issue for many years. This film takes an affectionate look at him and his life.

:: F 15 - Director: Marc Francis - 5 mins ::
This powerful film about the largest demonstration in British history was received on the day of screening, but because of its topicality (and quality) we decided to include it in tonight's programme. The date is February 15th, 2003 and the event is a gathering of 1.5 million people in London to protest against the US/UK-led war against Iraq. On the evening of the protest, the rushes of were uploaded to the Oneworld TV website where over 20,000 people around the world viewed them during the following week.
