VISIT BRIGHTON: CineCity event - Sunday, November 25th 2007
Our second screening in the 2008 CineCity film festival was a free event presented in association with the city's tourist website, VisitBrighton, and Screen Archive South East.
The evening opened with a 50-minute compilation of archive footage created specially for Final Cut by the SASE's director, Dr Frank Gray, some of which had never been shown to the public before. A highlight was the 50th anniversary screening of BRIGHTON (1957) made by local photographic shop owner and amateur cameraman, John King, which is the earliest surviving tourist film of the city. The second part of the event was devoted to the premiere screening of the nine winning 'ultra-short' films in the VISIT BRIGHTON film competition we organised with VisitBrighton, plus the awarding of generous cash prizes and equipment hire packages from Brighton's Pro Motion Hire. There was also the hotly contested People's Choice prize of £200 for the film receiving the most votes by the general public cast in the online viewing/voting section.
Finally, we screened Richard Harris' popular The Meeting Place film, an affectionate tribute to the old Meeting Place beach cafe on Hove Lawns that served tea and cakes for over 80 years before being demolished in 2003.
