:: 2005 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE SCREENINGS ::

:: THURSDAY, MAY 12TH: THE MARLBOROUGH THEATRE, PAVILION STREET, BRIGHTON ::

This screening focused on the work of South East film-makers with a collection of fifteen brand-new dramas, comedies, documentaries, animation and music videos.

:: LIFE IN THE RING - Director David Ward - 2 mins ::
"It's a hard life...a life in the ring" explains Laura, the long-suffering wife of one of the ring's greatest performers. But there's a twist in the tale of this clever, well-made comedy that uses a largely Brighton-based crew and cast and was shot with Sony's new HDCAM technology.

:: 2EYESopen - Director Mateo Willis - 5 mins ::
Documentary by a Cranleigh-based video artist examining the blockbuster-style movie premier which on this occasion had Tom Cruise as its star guest. The camera roams through the jostling crowd of fans, film crews and security guards whose attention is focused on the Hollywood star. Nobody notices or cares about a body being dragged from under their feet, limp and ominous.

:: COURIER - Director Rikki Tarascas - 15 mins ::
Filmed on Super 16mm, this stunning chiller won an Alfred Hitchcock script award. It tells the story of Luke, an abstract artist and spin painter who takes a job as a cycle courier. Unfortunately, Luke's main customer is a serial killer and his various journeys involve the delivery of human body parts.

Recent screenings include Cannes, Raindance and the London Film Festival

:: STARLINGS - Director Steven Glashier - 3 mins ::
This atmospheric B/W homage to Nosferatu combines a strong narrative with arresting visuals and tight editing to produce a compelling film that goes far beyond its music video brief.

:: FESTER! FESTER! - Director Alex Ryan - 3 mins ::
The smell of oil and burning rubber are not usually associated with supermarket trolleys, but this fast and furious action comedy thinks otherwise with its story of a mighty clash between adrenaline junkies along the pathways of their local park. The race is on!

:: THE LONELY WALK - Directors Christopher Perkins and Tim Hunt - 7 mins ::
Yes, folks, the one you've been waiting for! This long-awaited Trailer Trash favourite is finally ready for the Big Screen. Final Cut is proud to present the World Premiere of this seriously weird, but highly watchable 'experimental comedy' from these Burgess Hill film-makers.

:: THE COLLECTOR - Director Lorne Guy - 17 mins ::
Set in the killing fields of WW1, this powerful drama tells the story of Corporal Robert Riley, the regiment's deadliest sniper. Riley is an oddly compassionate killer who collects a wild flower for each life he takes. As the demands of the sniper's grissly work gradually erode his sanity, a fellow soldier tries to save him from annihilation.

:: TRA LA LA - Director Magali Charrier -3 mins ::
Tralala is a dance film that reflects on the ephemeral nature of innocence and childhood. By combining live action with animated chalk drawings, it cleverly creates a magical B/W fairytale world in which three young women visit the imaginary realms of their past.

:: TELEVISUAL MAN - Director Steve Piper - 4 mins ::
Britain has the largest number of public CCTV cameras per head of population in the world. This thought-provoking experimental drama explores the social and political impact of 24-hour surveillance on a nation already softened-up for intrusive observation by pseudo-reality TV shows such as C4's Big Brother.

:: SLOW WEST VULTURES - Directors Adam Aiken and Shelley Revill - 4 mins ::
This is the first film collaboration by animators Aiken and Revill and is strongly influenced by images of Victorian industrialism and 1930s Communist Party posters. Set to music by The Mountain Goats, it depicts a dark industrial world inhabited by 'The Vultures' from which a solitary human escapes but is soon overwhelmed. Upon her returned to The Factory, she discovers the secret of her tormentor's curse.

:: WHO - Directors Tez Palmer and Matt Jones - 9 mins ::
In this enigmatic murder mystery, a tuxedo-dressed man with a bloody head-wound regains consciousness in a field. Experiencing total amnesia and possessing no idea how he got there, he discovers a wallet in his jacket pocket with a credit card identifying him as Mark Heath.

:: CONSCIOUS DREAMING - Tessa Lewin - 5 mins ::
Gentle, whimsical animated music video from this Brighton-based Zimbabwean fine artist and film-maker who has numerous festival, film and TV credits. The main character is a fridge magnet who escapes from the fridge door to become a real person and discover who it (she) really is.

:: THE ONLY ONE - Directors Madeleinne Mullet and Steve Laycock - 6 mins ::
Produced by two Sussex University students as a part of their degree programme, this well-made film is an intriguing journey into the mind of a lonely young woman.

:: GONE - Director Kevin Turrell - 6 minsGONE - Director Kevin Turrell - 6 mins ::
Nigel has made a serious mistake and now he has to face the consequences, but is there any way he can put things right?

:: LOVE STORY - Director Oliver Gray - 3 mins ::
Cynical and very funny film charting the rapid decline of a love affair with a wholly unexpected and profoundly satisfying ending (to this reviewer) involving a third party - hopefullynot the woman's new lover.
