THE TELEPHONE EULOGIES – Director Joe Hiscott - 16 mins
From Canada, a living experiment on film combining a children’s game of ‘broken telephone’ with a self-penned eulogy and a trans-cultural cast of translators and performers speaking many different tongues.
This is how it works: A eulogy is written in English by Hiscott and given to a Portuguese translator and the translated version is performed for camera by a Portuguese-speaking actor. This version is then given to a French translator who prepares a version in his language that is performed by a French actor, and so on. The original piece eventually went through 21 translations/performances in 12 languages including Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Finnish, Tamil, German and Mohawk. The film concludes when the last version is translated back into English and performed for the camera - with predictably surprising results.
