BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE 2008

SPOTLIGHT SOUTH EAST - Sunday, May 4th @ Sallis Benney Theatre

Our first screening of the 2008 Brighton Festival presented this superb collection of 15 short films from the region's most talented indie filmmakers. There was something for everyone in tonight's packed programme of brand-new work: drama, comedy, animation, documentaries, music videos and ultra-shorts - including Tim Hunt's The Lonely Tree, south east winner of the 2008 Orange BAFTA 60 Seconds of Fame and Mike Rymer's Sick, Gold Award winner in the 2008 Houston International Film Festival.

In addition to the films, there were innovative film-themed VJ sets from Quadratura and a surprise mini-drama written and performed by Brighton's famous Bite-Size Theatre.

THE LONELY TREE – Director Tim Hunt – 1 min
This terrific ultra-short was made by a Final Cut ‘regular’ whose work we have featured in previous festival screenings and concerns a chance encounter beneath an Orange  tree.

South East winner, 2008 Orange BAFTA 60 Seconds of Fame

BUSKER – Director David Wigram – 6 mins
Brilliant French actor, Dominique Pinon, stars in this perfect festival film, playing an aspiring mime artiste struggling to impress his audience. When even a tone-deaf guitarist receives more attention from the public, he pulls out his air guitar for the performance of a lifetime.

THE INVISIBLE WOMAN – Director Leon Trigg - 5 mins
Powerful, semi-autobiographical documentary about the director’s mother and her attempts to encourage people to accept the ageing process and resist the temptation to waste money on cosmetic surgery, botox treatments, etc.

STUBBORN & SPITE - Director Lou Birks – 3 mins
Ever get frustrated when you can't find an accessible parking spot? Witness the mayhem which ensues when two disabled drivers fight over who should get the last disabled spot.

SHUNGOR – Director Martin Malone - 9 mins
This hilarious sword n’ sorcery spoof was made for pennies in the smallest effects studio imaginable, and tells the story of a luckless twerp who believes he is a Super Hero. Shungor's bravery when fighting monsters and evil rulers is only matched by his staggering ability to make a complete cock-up of things. Shungor! Half man, half wit.

STEPHEN MADDAMS’ LITTLEHAMPTON BLUES - Director Steve Jackman - 9 mins
Marking the fifth anniversary of his death, this moving film examines the life and work of Littlehampton’s best-known artist, Stephen Maddams (1952-2002), as remembered by his partner, Jenny Lansdell, and other people.

ELEMENTAL: CUP OF BROWN JOY - Director Moog - 3 mins
Elemental was the quintessential 19th century English fellow: explorer, scientist, exotic dancer (eh?) and, some might say, raving lunatic. Banned from thirteen colonies for conducting 'unspeakable scientific experiments', yet heralded as a deity in many others. Moog teamed up with Elemental after being lured to his laboratory by the promise of laudanum. The laudanum didn't appear, but this strikingly original music video did.

SICK – Director Mike Rymer – 15 mins
Selected for six international festivals, this powerful and good-looking 35mm film deals with depression and alcohol abuse. Brian’s daughter is an alcoholic, relying on him for her son’s welfare, but when his wife dies, he arranges for the child to be taken into care. For 15 years, his daughter refuses to speak to him then finally gathers the strength to make contact.

Gold Award winner, 2008 Houston International Film Festival

HOW NOT TO SAY I LOVE YOU - Director: Alex Sufit - 6 mins
In this romantic comedy, Ben has just been dumped by his busy actress girlfriend, Claire. He suddenly appears at one of her rehearsals and confronts her on stage, where, in the full glare of the spotlights, he gives us a lesson on how not to say the magic words.

FRITES – Director Jon Garbett - 5mins
For many years, Claude has had an unhealthy obsession and when his long-suffering girlfriend finally confronts him about it, events take a decidedly strange turn.

A HITCH IN THE PLAN – Director Paul Denny – 2 mins
A panic-stricken woman is pursued relentlessly along a deserted city path late at night. Who is chasing her and why? The terrible truth awaits her at home.

DANIEL SPARKS - Director Nick Bisson – 12 mins
After accidentally getting his head stuck in a gate on a reality TV show in 2002, Daniel Sparks’ life became a whirlwind of party invites and sponsorship deals from retailers of garden furniture. Although minor celebrity status has given him more time for his hobby of painting full-size pictures of roads markings, and he still loves being mistaken for Graham Norton, shouldn't there be more to life?

SUN IN THE NIGHT TIME – Director Anne Wilkins – 3 mins
A mother waits for her long lost son to return while her young daughter plays with a strange, imaginary friend.

SIGHT (VII days) – Director Rehana Rose Khan – 2 mins
“...and God said...” starring Phyllida Law

Friends of the Earth '2008 People’s Choice Award' (3rd place)

SURVIVANCE – Director Faye-Anne Wilkinson - 15 mins
Thirty years after a massive tidal wave devastated the south coast, dramatic footage of the event and its aftermath filmed by a Brighton resident is uncovered. A lucky survivor of the disaster returns to the destroyed city in this powerful Sci-Fi thriller that uses stunning CGI-style effects to reveal the enormous damage, loss of life and social breakdown. This is global warming - you have been warned!

I AM JOHN DENVER – Director Roy Peterson - 4 mins
Four improvisational comics gain inspiration from the life and music of John Denver. Featuring Marianne Sheehan, Tim Gambrell, Roy Petersen and Nicholas Hughes as the great man himself, the film was shot in London as part of an ‘improv filming weekend sort-of-thing’ and the results are hilarious.
