2005 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE SCREENINGS

THURSDAY, MAY 26TH: HANBURY ARMS BALLROOM, KEMPTOWN, BRIGHTON

Our last-night screening focused on the exotic as we unleashed an exciting package of 30 ultra-shorts, left-field music videos and other film goodies on an unsuspecting city. The packed evening included a rare 'Netjacking' performance from American musician and laptop guru, Stuart Smith and the world premiere of 'No Man's Land', a new computer-driven music-VJ piece from Anglo-Burmese singer and composer, Fiona Soe Paing.

We also premiered nine ultra-shorts completed by participants of our innovative 'One Minute Wonder' film course, co-funded by Awards For All and Screen South and with the support of Brighton's Lighthouse Arts & Training and Electric Sky. Completed just days before the screening, these films were so new, the paint hadn't dried. A jury of film-makers including WIZ, one of the UK's most respected music video directors and Nick Broomfield's producer, Michele d'Acosta will view the results and award a 'best-film' prize.

ACID RAIN - Director Martin Malone - 10 mins

Tense, Brighton-shot drama about a man desperately seeking his unstable brother who is threatening to commit a terrible act of violence to fix 'the problem' that torments him. His desperate race against time reveals buried truths about the past and leads to a shocking conclusion. Features an original music score by Orbital.

BOBSBOXES - Director Matt Watt - 2 mins

An original and clever film about two lovers inhabiting television sets on different sides of a TV shop and their attempts to meet in the flesh.

BOY MEETS GIRL (in 23 Stills) - Director/Choreographer - Chirstinn Whyte - 1min

Clever and unusual dance ultra-short with a happy ending

DOPPELGANGER - Director Tal Rosner - 4 mins

Well-executed experimental music animation, described by the director as a 'sketchbook-in-motion' exploring the process of personalizing public spaces by de- and re-construction using different design/editing techniques.

UK premiere

SORORICIDE (BRAND VIOLET) - Director Anthony Carpendale - 4 mins

Urban vampire music video starring UK SuicideGirls Vicky, Tilly, and Cherry. While Brand Violet rehearse their new track in the studio, a group of sexy female vampires wander the streets of Soho, hungry for blood and new hosts for their vampire plague. Although lead singer, Sally, is unable to resist their charms, Brand Violet and Pimp Daddy Poppa Creamy attempt to escape the bloodbath. Hmm...

THE FAITH-BASED SPACE BATTLE - Director Sean Condon - 7 mins

This clever satire on religious hatred from a New York animator moves the theological battleground into outer space as hundreds of hi-tech church-style spaceships fight for galactic supremacy.

UK premiere

FACES OF GLASTONBURY - Director Stuart Smith - 3 mins

This fast-paced impression of the 2004 Glastonbury Festival uses 180 still images to reveal the energy, enthusiasm and humour of festival-goers.

LONE WARRIOR - Director Jason Impey - 90 secs

A samurai warrior wonders the waste-land hunting evil, when suddenly he hears something. Is it an evil force or just his imagination?

PICKED - Director K. Akeseh Tsakpo - 8 mins

Award-winning drama telling the story of a professional pickpocket and how he discovers there is a very thin line between victim and perpetrator.

TRACED - Director Rajyashree Ramamurthi - 90 secs

Excellent Indian-influenced B/W dance ultra-short.

MANIFESTO (DRINKME) - Director Ben Rollason - 3 mins

Another chance for festival audiences to see this excellent music video and welcome antidote to the recent General Election. Shot 'guerilla-style' in various well-known London locations, it follows lead-singer, Ruth Owen, as she tours the city to deliver her Manifesto. Great song, too.

ORDAN'S FOREST - Director Scott Walker - 12 mins

Exciting and well-made fantasy adventure about a young boy who embarks on a dangerous journey into a magic forest, following the loss of his father. Far from the safety of home, he desperately searches for a way out only to become impossibly lost. Drawn ever deeper into the forest, he is finally discovered by its immortal guardian, the fearsome Ordan.

TRUE FAITH - Director Sebastian Dove - 3 mins

Jukka is an American in Paris. Walking it's beautiful streets one day, he sees a person he wants to attract, so he walks up to him and sings a love song.

PEOPLE LIKE YOU (PONY) - Director Stephen Glashier - 4 mins

"Drawing on the raw emotions behind the smooth veneer of Pony's music, the video creates a dreamlike atmosphere, a journey into a surreal world of desire and lost innocence." It says here.

HURRY ON NOW (ALICE RUSSEL) - Director Steven Glashier - 5 mins

Lush, melancholy jazz-oriented music video filmed in the Speigeltent.

UK SUICIDEGIRLS - Director Anthony Carpendale - 4 mins

Music/performance video showcasing the adult-oriented burlesque talents of UK SuicideGirls filmed at Brighton's Engine Rooms, in February 2005. The girls wow the audience with a variety of routines, using fans, absinthe, ropes and knives. Music by 65daysofstatic.

REMOTE - John Burns - 1 min

Another film we had to show again. A clever, sexy ultra-short about a beautiful woman failing to seduce her TV-obsessed boyfriend.

AGAIN & AGAIN - Director Oscar Stringer - 5 mins

In this powerful dance film, the ghosts of two young women involved in a fatal car accident relive the final seconds before impact. It explores the internal dynamics of a car crash in which bodies move rapidly and randomly within a confined space, the rhythms of chaos being further manipulated during post production.

MOVING PLATES - Director Zoran Dragelj - 3 mins

Award-wining Canadian film using found footage and multiple editing techniques to create an intensely personal impression of the director's childhood. The original format was 16mm.
