2005 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL FRINGE SCREENINGS

THURSDAY, MAY 19TH: OCEAN ROOMS, MORLEY STREET, BRIGHTON

Our 'Big Apple' night presented a line-up of new UK shorts and the latest work from the New York indie scene - plus the launch of our UK-wide '24/7' internet streaming facility.

All of the NY films were receiving their UK premieres, including the mini-retrospective of work from cult NY underground director, Nicolas Jenkins. Nic's uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time has produced some memorable films about the icons and identities of the NY entertainment sub-culture and he gave us exclusive permission to screen three of his most notorious films: 'Click & Drag', 'Amanda Lepore' and 'Antony & The Johnsons'.

CLICK + DRAG - Director Nicolas Jenkins - 10 mins

During the late 90's Click + Drag was an underground weekly multimedia nightlife extravaganza that delved into the world of fetishes and cyberspace. Created by some of the people behind the legendary Jackie 60 parties, it was New York's most influential and forward-thinking party organisation which successfully removed the barrier between live and virtual club experience.

AMANDA LEPORE - Director Nicolas Jenkins - 7 mins

The remarkable Amanda Lepore is one of New York's most photographed celebrities and its most influential trans-gendered performer. Muse to fashion photographer, David Lachapelle, she is also a recording artist and Swatch-Watch model. Amanda is not interested in being a real girl, she just wants to be a drawing of a girl, 'just like Jessica Rabbit'.

ANTONY AND THE JOHNSONS - Director Nicolas Jenkins - 12 mins

A fascinating look at the life and work of New York singing sensation Antony whose new album and European tour with The Johnson's are receiving rave reviews. Made just before Antony shot to fame in 2004, it looks at his involvement (as co-founder) with the legendary underground theatre group, Black Lips Performance Cult, and includes interviews with long-time Black Lips collaborators, Johanna Constantine and Julia Yasuda.

ONE HUNDRED - Director Nick Calori - 6 mins

This thoughtful and well-acted drama has a warm heart and a happy ending, of sorts. It tells the story of a troubled, but loving relationship between a nine year-old boy and his father who is about to be imprisoned. To show his son that he is still a 'worthy' dad - and to gain his affection and respect - the father engages in a bizarre competition with a local football star. How did they find an actor with such amazing ball skills? (don't answer that)

OPERA BABY - Directors Shane and Paula Sheils - 3 mins

A surreal and unsettling film about a strange creature that sings opera in a back-street music club every night of the week - except Tuesdays.

MIND GAMES - Director Peter Bunzl - 3 mins

Set in a futuristic maximum security institution, this subtle and well-made animation tells the story of a group of mind-scientists as they monitor the thoughts of Prisoner 364.

COST OF LIVING - Director Max Hochrad - 10 mins

In this clever satire set in the near future, a young woman manages to rent an amazing apartment for an unbelievably low rent. So, what's the catch?

PLAYTIME - Director Arwel Gruffyd - 10 mins

A beleaguered young teacher, weighed down by a secret burden, finds that when fantasy and reality collide, the result can be unexpectedly empowering.

TWITCH- Director Leah Meyerhoff - 10 mins

Originally shot in 16mm, this powerful drama tells the story of a young girl who has a troubled and emotionally charged relationship with her disabled mother. She develops an irrational fear that her mother's disability is contagious, but her immature boyfriend is oblivious to this as his interest in her is mostly physical.

HUMAN NO MORE- Director Christopher Broadstone - 16 mins

Disturbing psychological horror from this award-winning author and film-maker receiving its first UK screening. It charts the mental and physical destruction of a private detective, driven to distraction by an unsolvable murder case, who descends into a personal, private underworld of insanity.

THE DEVIL & MANNY SCHMECKSTEIN - Jim Goodman - 6 mins

After an untimely on-stage death, stand-up comic Manny Schmeckstein discovers that a lifetime of telling bad jokes has consigned him to eternal damnation. But the agent of all agents, Beelzebub, comes to his rescue with an offer of redemption - provided he can get one good laugh.

RORY FIELDING - Director Kevin Napier - 6 mins

Last, but by no means least, we have this very clever and well-acted Woody Allen - esque film, which appeared out of nowhere and all of our attempts to contact the film-maker have failed (so, if you 're out there - contact us!). Based on an original and hilarious premise, it is full of witty self-deprecating dialogue and well- judged performances. Think Zelig and you're almost there.

New York indie

UNTITLED 4.2 - Director Bulent Bas - 2 mins

A powerful impressionistic work based on TV newsreel footage of a terrified young Palestinian boy being protected by his father from Israeli army gunfire moments before his death.
