2006 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL SCREENINGS

WEDNESDAY, MAY 3RD: REVENGE NIGHTCLUB

Final Cut kicked off its 2006 festival campaign with this impressive collection of 16 new shorts plus film-themed VJ sets and a fresh crop of Trailer Trash teasers for new and almost-finished films.

The evening also featured the offical launch of FINAL CUT -TAKE TWO. Our second annual limited-edition DVD is a double-dics release, containing 24 of the best films we've screened during the past year. Click image for details and to view a specially commissioned promo.

THE CAR - Director Gil Brailey - 11 mins

In this compelling and well-acted drama, old friends Luke and Jarelle have some urgent business to conduct concerning Luke's little brother. Luke once saved his friend's life and now he desperately needs his help, so for Jarelle it's payback time in more ways than one.

DELUSION - Director Philip Day - 6 mins

Breathtaking animation about the journey of Mechanical Man, trapped forever within a twisting labyrinth of underground steel corridors. This superbly realised allegory about the future of humanity also has a great soundtrack.

ALL TIME LOVE (WILL YOUNG) - Director WIZ - 5 mins

First off-TV screening of the latest blockbuster music video from award-winning British director, WIZ, the creative force behind some of the most inventive (and expensive) music videos ever produced in this country. He has given us exclusive permission to screen this film which continues his passion for introducing politically subversive elements into mainstream films promoting the music of major recording stars.

World Premiere and first time 'live' screening on a cinema screen

TABURETE - Director Helen Parlor - 4 mins

Envisaged, choreographed, filmed and edited in just 24 hours this dance film explores issues of restriction, emotion and uncertainty in three women's lives. By using numerous close-ups of their bodies to direct our attention to particular details of movement, the film-maker reveals aspects of dance that often goes unnoticed in live performance.

GAS - Director Philip Clyde-Smith - 1 min

While preparing a meal, Clyde-Smith noticed how the gas flame seemed to dance in time with the music coming from his radio. 'Why not make a film about a dancing cooker?' he thought. As one does.

OUT OF OFFICE - Director Sasha Yevtushenko - 5 mins

Although humans are apparently born free, too many become trapped by their ring-binders and this clever satire on the creeping influence of office-based work reveals just how enslaved we have become.

SMILE - Director Carlo Ortu - 11 mins

Angered by drug dealers plying their trade outside his flat and the disinterest of the authorities in stopping their activities, Dave Webster buys a video camera. But in this very funny black comedy, his covert intelligence gathering operation gets seriously out of control.

FLICKER - Director Christinn Whyte - 1 min

Another clever dance short from this talented and prolific London film-maker, working with long-time collaborator, Brighton's own Jake Messenger. In this piece, a single continuous sequence of improvised movement is distributed between four quarters of the screen to create a flicker effect, reminiscent of early cinema.

Whyte's 2005 film, 'Magical Thinking', is featured in Final Cut-Take Two.

SO YOU WANT TO BE IN THE FILM BUSINESS - Director Tony Moon - 4 mins

Want to know about the awful truth behind the creation of those awful Hollywood blockbusters - and maybe even a few low-budget shorts? Well, its called Development Hell and its corridors are full of people you can't trust. The Player wasn't half as nasty as this witty expose of the dark side of the film business.

PINCH ME JESUS - Director James Scott - 3 mins

If you've ever watched American evangelical TV, you'll love this hilariously bad-taste send up of its money-grabbing style. Totally authentic in look and feel, yet made in Hove!

SPEED DATE - Mark Jackson - 3 mins

Snappy comedy about the noble art of Speed Dating, as practiced by one particularly sad individual .

Finalist in the 2006 Future Shorts 'Faster Film' competition.

THE SLEEPER - Director Phil Martin - 4 mins

In this exciting thriller, a man plots a terrorist attack on London's water supply. He's white, wears a suit and jokes with his mates in the office. Just an ordinary man with a suitcase - containing enough botulin to kill a million people.

A US government report published by the National Academy of Sciences states that just 4 grams of botulin can kill up to 400,000 people.

RENDEZVOUS - Director Peter Mengler - 4 mins

Imaginative and beautifully filmed fantasy of doomed Victorian love and unfulfilled expectations set amongst the rusting pylons of the West Pier at low tide.

BOWS & ARROWS - Director Stephen Irwin - 6 mins

Striking, darkly imaginative animation about an elderly man lying ill in a hospital bed; his only companion a superhero doll he has owned since a boy. As an Evil Robot wreaks mayhem in the city outside, he comes to the horrific conclusion that he might be responsible for the carnage taking place.

MOWING THE LAWN - Director Michael Bentham - 8 mins

Tense, well-acted low-budget drama - with a seriously big-budget look - about a famous 20th-century pioneer plagued by fear as he contemplates taking his first steps into the unknown.

5 LESSONS IN COPING - Director Matthew Walters - 5 mins

In a funny and well-directed comedy, we meet Emma who is having difficulty coping with the loss of her boyfriend. But this doesn't stop her telling the rest of us how we should deal with our own relationship difficulties. Another winning film from this ex-stand-up comic, dubbed 'The Welsh Bard of Comedy'. Lovely!
