2006 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL SCREENINGS

WEDNESDAY, MAY 24TH: HANBURY ARMS BALLROOM

We pulled out all the stops for our last-night screening party which presented a packed house with this exotic mix of ultra-shorts, left-field music videos and other weird stuff, washed down with film-themed DJ-VJ sets and Trailer Trash previews. The evening also featured a performance by fringe-hits Oddfellows Casino who performed a live music accompaniment to a specially commissioned silent film from tonight's VJ, Toby Amies, plus a rare Netjacking performance from US musician and laptop guru, Stuart Smith.

Rappin Granny & Tim Greene

YA GRANDMA'S A GANGSTA - Director Tim Greene - 4 mins

Hilarious US music video parody ostensibly promoting the latest release from a 65-year old black female rapper and US TV star, Vivian Smallwood, aka Rappin Granny.

"Rappin Granny's 'Hip Hop Pop', promoted as 'Da Soda wit de flava', is a new line in soft drinks from Tim Green Entertainment and LA-based, Hip Hip Distributors." - story in Beveridge World's 'Periscope' magazine (film-makers promoting their own fizzy drinks? Only in America)

UK PREMIERE

THE SPACE TIME ENVELOPE - Director James Harris - 3 mins

If you found an envelope that contained the whole space-time continuum, what would you do? You could go back in time to right historical wrongs or take a glimpse at the future or visit distant worlds and civilisations. Or you could use it to get some lunch money. You know, if you were really hungry.

UK PREMIERE

FASTER BIGGER BETTER MORE! - Director Dominic Lyddon - 3 mins

This technically accomplished music video was commissioned to promote new drum 'n bass act, Prolix, and is a first-time film from a young Brighton-based graphic designer.

UK PREMIERE

BLACK GLOVES - Director Stephen Glashier - 3 mins

Hot off the press, this manic Brighton-produced music video uses converted wheelie-bins to promote a single from new Skint Records signing, Goose.

UK PREMIERE

LA BREAKERS: PARTS 1 & 2 - Director Joel Kuwahara - 4/3 mins

Two mini-docs from America's coolest video blogger about the LA Breakers, stars of the burgeoning Los Angeles hip hop dance scene. Joel Kuwahara was the subject of an exclusive retrospective at our Big Apple screening on May 9th and in these films he tells the story of a world famous team of gymnasts and dancers who's ages range from teens to 40s.

WORLD PREMIERE

THE ART OF GOING SIDEWAYS - Directors Patrick Biddulph & Andrew Naumann - 5 mins

Fast-paced documentary looking at the subject of Slide Skateboarding with legendary (and distinctly middle-aged) US skateboarder, Cliff Coleman. Showcasing the world-beating skills of Brazilian champ, Sergio Yuppie (we kid you not), this film contains the hottest new tricks and moves on the down hill free-style scene. Phew!

SOMETIMES - Director Johny Burns - 4 mins

From the person who brought you the sexy ultra-short, Remote, one of last year's festival hits, this animated music video tells the story of how a Frankenstein-style monster rises to fame and falls from grace. A modern fable of sex, drugs and bunny rabbits.

CRANKTITIS - Director Lance Hamilton - 10 mins

Originally shot on 16mm, this superbly made and deeply atmospheric sub-Eraserhead B/W enigma comes complete with its own industrial soundtrack.

MONTAGE ONE - Director Matt Watt - 2 mins

Superbly shot all-action rollerblading film displaying the amazing skills of young roller-bladers performing at various well-known London locations.

PINCH ME JESUS - Director James Scott - 3 mins

Final festival outing for this clever bad-taste send up of American evangelical TV and its wall-to-wall money-grabbing 'ads. Totally authentic in look and feel, yet made in Hove. We love it!

"The truth, the whole truth…and something like the truth."

ILLEGAL - Director Robert Cambrinus - 12 mins

One of several film we have received on this subject, Illegal, is a well-acted drama about two immigrants who meet in a London café and strike up an unlikely friendship. The only thing they have in common is their illegal status and a shared sense of being a long way from home.

UK PREMIERE

iCHAV - Director Simon Hill - 1 min

Clever ultra-short spoof of the popular iPod commercial.

TERZETTO - Director Amanda Smith - 10 mins

This skilful combination of stunning photography and a well-judged sound design reveals the majesty of our urban landscape via an intensely visual journey into the commercial heart of three Midlands cities.

TONIGHT - Director Mehul Desai - 3 mins

Amish is celebrating his 18th birthday in a smart restaurant, but after noticing the shapely legs of a beautiful blonde across the room he realises that it's not balloons and cards he wants this year.

BUS KONG - Director Ed Hartwell - 2 mins

Winner of the Farewell Routemaster Film Challenge, this animation says 'farewell' to London's famous Routemaster double-decker bus with a witty King Kong pastiche.

FESTIVAL WINNER

THE SPACE HOPPER RACE - Director Mat Sunderland - 6 mins

'To tight for my girth by a length!' shouted the bookies as To Tight For My Girth, romped home in the final straight of the third annual space hopper race along Soho's Old Compton street. Five hopper-jockeys went head-to-head in a terrifying battle of wills and chronic chafing on these magnificent rubber beasts. 'Fantastic movers and a top field. I wish I could have raced' a veteran commentator lamented, kicking a dead hopper with a fatal puncture. 'They're under starters orders… they're off!'
