2006 BRIGHTON FESTIVAL SCREENINGS

WEDNESDAY, MAY 17TH: OCEAN ROOMS NIGHTCLUB

Our 'SPOTLIGHT SOUTH EAST' screening focused on the work of film-makers living from the South East region with this superb collection of 16 brand-new shorts. The evening included moreTrailer Trash previews and film-themed VJ sets.

TRUTH - Director Mark Robbins - 3 mins

Using a mixture of still photography, animation and live action, this dark and surreal thriller about a man on the run pays homage to Chris Marker's 1962 classic La Jetée.

DELETED - Director Martyn Holmes - 5 mins

Shot entirely on a mobile phone, this remarkable film uses images, text and video from a man's handset, accompanied by a woman's voice-over to tell the seriously creepy story of how two strangers met in a bar and fell in love - and why the affair ended.

Warning: some of the images used in this film are genuinely disturbing.

HARD CASE - Director Brian Barnes - 7 mins

In a clever, well-made comedy drama we meet Child Support Agency investigator Emma Lewis, currently engaged in a particularly tricky assignment to track down an errant husband with an unusual double life

SHAOLIN FUNK - Director Jason Davison - 3 mins

Brighton-produced animated music video that features a strong track and plenty of striking imagery.

STUNG - Director Chris Hopper -10 mins

Assured, intelligent film set in an English country garden one summer afternoon. It tells the story of an elderly bee-keeper as she sifts through distant memories to recall the roots of her love for honeybees.

OFF THE BEATEN TRACK - Director Leo Bridle - 2 mins

Using cut-out animation and live-action, this first-time animation tells the story of a young man cycling through a park who suddenly takes a wrong turn into the woods.

IMBROGLIO - Director Ian Sciacaluga - 16 mins

Powerful and exceptionally well-made drama about a man's search for his wife's lover.

3 - Director Steve Piper - 3 mins

Lee gets an unexpected visit from best mate Jon, fresh from a break-up with his girlfriend. She surprised him with some bad news and now he's going to surprise Lee.

PINCH ME JESUS - Director James Scott 3 mins

Another festival outing for a truly hilariously bad-taste send up of American evangelical TV and its wall-to-wall money-grabbing 'ads. Totally authentic in look and feel, yet made in Hove!

3 DEGREES - Tim Hunt & Christopher Perkins - 8 mins

From the Burgess Hill directors of The Long Walk, one of last year's festival hits, comes this oddball split-screen comedy. It tells the story of a young woman (pictured) who is contemplating drastic action to ease the pain of a split-up from a boyfriend who is already chasing after another woman.

TRUE LOVE - Director Paul Dugdale - 13 mins

Meet Andrew Tucker, a lonely Brighton resident devoted for many years to his house-bound mother - until he met Julie. But it didn't work out. So, where is his mother now and whatever happened to Julie?

'Really good' - Henry Normal (Steve Coogan's co-writer)

STANDING DOWN - Ross Shepherd - 5 mins

Tense WWII drama with an unexpected and satisfying twist in which a British and German soldier find themselves locked in a life or death face-off. Although neither can understand the other, the German is intent on explaining something of great importance to the Brit who stubbornly refuses to listen. Typical.

PATIENCE - Director Martyn Holmes - 2 mins

Hilarious sepia-toned 'silent-movie' shot on Super-8 and miniDV, with an original music score, telling the story of Patience, the world's rudest person.

MYRIA - Director Chris Thomas - 8 mins

Max's world is turned on its head when he lets the mysterious Tim into his house one morning to use the phone. From then on, nothing in his life is what it seems in this complex and fast-paced Momento-style thriller that cleverly uses flash-back and multiple timeline juxtapositions to keep you guessing right up to the end.

THE WEDDING DAY - Director Tony Ryan - 1:23 mins

Clever ultra-short about a man leaving his lover's bed one Saturday morning - to marry another woman.

PEST - Director Matt Sunderland - 5 mins

Clever and well-executed music video combining live action and animation to promote a new song from The Ogres. London-born Sunderland moved down to Brighton last year and did a great job editing our special Joel Kuwahara doc for our May 9th festival screening.
