PROGRAMME: Wednesday, August 23rd 2006

THE HAPPINESS THIEF - Director Derek Boyes - 14 mins

Superbly-made fantasy with studio-level production values about a miserable girl who curses her younger brother for being so happy, not realising the curse will summon, in the darkness of night, a grotesque figure who steals the boy's happiness. Horrified and ridden with guilt, the girl chases 'The Happiness Thief' across the city's rooftops in a desperate attempt to bargain with him. But he is not an easy creature to please.

TRAPPED - Director Sam Norland - 3 mins

Powerful and shocking experimental film from a Brighton film-maker exploring violent insanity through the warped reality of a man held captive by his own mind. The soundscape accompanying his frantic activity is equally disturbing.

HOME - Director Carol Liu - 13 mins

In this simple and quietly moving 35mm film, we meet Tong and his father who have just moved into a modern Beijing apartment block from their old house. Tong's father struggles to adapt to the new environment and sorely misses his beloved pedicab that was sold due to lack of space. Conscious of his father's growing unhappiness, Tong buys him a new vehicle as a surprise birthday present and together they ride to the old neighbourhood.

PILOT FOR A 22nd CENTURY SITCOM - Director Graeme Cole - 5 mins

2112 AD: a smug scientist is pushed to the limit when his domestic goddess wife gets the 'nuclear fear' and no longer see the point in doing her chores. Progress collides with primal instinct when her worries prove world-shatteringly accurate.

LILY - Simon Hill - 90 seconds

Hypnotic ultra-short animation juxtaposing themes of nature and commerce to deliver a sad, sweet surprise.

NOOSE - Director Steven Glashier - 4 mins

Striking music video featuring local band, The Lodge, performing at a sleazy rock 'n roll house party that goes drastically out of control. Much of the film is shot with a DV camera attached to the lead singer's body.

RARE BOOKS AND MANUSCRIPTS - Director Bruce Webb - 12 mins

In the reading room of the British Library, a shy young woman finds herself falling in love with a man who seems to share her passion for books. Too tongue-tied to start a conversation, she orders books to be sent to his table, the titles spelling out her feelings for him. The campaign appears to be unsuccessful until one day she receives a book in return, but soon discovers it is not from the man of her dreams, but someone else: her own shy admirer.

SOUND LIKE THIS - Director Philip Clyde-Smith - 4 mins

Screened on Channel U and MTV Base, this fast-paced, imaginative and technically accomplished music video promotes a new song from rap artists, The Beatmakers.

THE GHOST OF KIRKTON THRELL - Directors James Lark & Jon Croker - 11 mins

In this well-made and genuinely creepy ghost story, a man who has cheated on his wife finds himself stranded on a deserted road in the middle of the night. Subjected to increasingly disturbing visions, he comes to realise that his sins are being judged by the ghost of a monk killed several centuries earlier.

SOUNDROOM - Director Yiannis Kolozis - 7 mins

Experimental, but accessible drama telling the story of a frustrated composer working at home, unable to concentrate because of loud noises coming from his various neighbours. But, then he realises this might actually be a kind of music from which he can draw inspiration.

THIS WAY UP - Director James Lee - 8 mins

Filmed on location in Brighton, mainly around Preston Circus and Preston Park, this first-time film is quirky gem; a mockumentary (we hope!) about the unusual methods a teenage girl uses to deal with life in the modern world.

USED - Director Mehul Desai - 3 mins

In this soleful drama, laced with comedy (it says here), we discover what happens to a pair of old shoes after they've been thrown out.

PINCH ME JESUS - Director James Scott - 3 mins

Clever, bad-taste send up of American evangelical TV and its wall-to-wall money-grabbing 'ads that rocked our festival audiences every time it was shown. Totally authentic in look and feel, yet made in Hove!

"The truth, the whole truth…and something like the truth."
